SYTEC Water Technologies is the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) division of Grupo SYTEC, an industrial conglomerate in Northern Mexico with a presence in the construction, sanitation, medical and outdoor equipment sectors.

Unsafe sanitation poses urgent challenges as our global population grows and water scarcity and urbanization trends intensify.
Over 4.5 billion people—more than half the world’s population—practice open defecation or use unsafe sanitation facilities. Proper management at all stages, from waste collection to treatment, is crucial.
Poor sanitation contributes to waterborne diseases, causing over 1,200 child deaths daily. Despite the clear link between sanitation and health risks, improvements are slow, and customized, cost-effective solutions are needed, especially in dense urban areas.
Solving this challenge requires breakthrough innovations for practical, replicable systems. Lack of proper sanitation costs an estimated US$223 billion annually, but every dollar invested yields significant economic return. New sanitation technologies could reach a global market value of over US$6 billion by 2030.
Reinvent the Toilet Challenge: A brief history
In 2011, the Water, Sanitation & Hygiene program from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation initiated the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge to spur the creation of new toilet technologies that safely and effectively manage human waste.

The initiative aims to generate innovative solutions that can protect people and communities from human waste–borne pathogens and enable governments to deliver truly inclusive sanitation services that reach the poorest communities.
The program facilitated the development of the smart-flush circular toilet, an invention pioneered and designed by Cranfield University.

Known for its deep industrial expertise and commitment to sustainability, Grupo SYTEC was chosen as one of Cranfield's strategic partners for the development, manufacturing and commercialization of this technology.
